Entrepreneurial Spirit in Times of Adversity: A Story of Coping with a Rare Medical Condition

Jordan and Christa Gagnon

On this Tuesday’s episode of "Paul G's Corner," I had the pleasure of speaking with Christa Gagnon about her entrepreneurial journey and challenges after learning her daughter was diagnosed with a rare medical condition. We discussed how Christa's entrepreneurial spirit helped her cope with her daughter's diagnosis and how she and her family navigated the challenges that came with it.

During our conversation, Christa shared how her entrepreneurial spirit was ignited when she became a parent. She wanted to find a way to work from home and stay close to her children, which led her to start her own business. However, when her daughter Jordan was diagnosed with giant axonal neuropathy, everything changed. Christa and her family had to be flexible and fluid to manage the medical condition's complications. Giant axonal neuropathy is a rare medical condition that affects the nervous system. In children with this condition, the protein that attaches to neurons to remove unnecessary messages from the nervous system does not function correctly. Instead, it piles up inside the nerves and causes them to grow larger, eventually cutting off all nervous functions. With only 70 known cases in the world, the condition is incredibly difficult to diagnose and manage. Christa shared how the medical condition affected her family's lives and how it took a year of sending blood work to the United States to get a diagnosis. The rarity of the condition meant that nobody in Canada had seen it before, making it even more challenging to manage. Despite the challenges, Christa's entrepreneurial spirit helped her navigate the situation. She found a way to balance being a parent and a business owner, teeter-tottering between the two. She admits that she may never have it completely figured out, but that's just the nature of life. In conclusion, this conversation highlights how the entrepreneurial spirit can help people cope with life's challenges. Christa's story shows how she used her entrepreneurial skills to navigate the difficulties of her daughter's rare medical condition. It's a reminder that even in the face of adversity, we can find ways to adapt and thrive. Thank you for joining us for this episode of "Paul G's Corner," featuring Christa Gagnon. We hope you enjoyed the conversation and gained valuable insights.
